Gamesa - Efficient maintenance with reliable documentation

Idle wind turbines cost its operators money. Therefore, the careful maintenance and servicing of large systems is really important.  To assist service technicians in the examination and repair of different wind turbines as well as possible, the manufacturer Gamesa Innovation & Technology provides in the documentation all the technical operations and functionality of the know-how of arvato services technical information.

Context

Gamesa designs, manufactures and commercializes wind turbines that are used worldwide. The systems are offered in a variety of designs and options to enable a customer-and location-specific adaptation.  These product variants were necessary to documented in details. To reach on the field of technical publications, a maintenance documentation of high quality with simultaneous automatic release as a PDF or HTML files, with a high degree of reusability and to reach an easier maintenance, significant challenges were overcome. Because at the beginning of the process one was working with a decentralized system of documentation and the information flow was not sufficiently defined. There were also difficulties with updating of the documentation.

Solution

Gamesa resulted with arvato a content management system, which was also based on XML, which is based on the product of standard aviation S1000D and information system.  All information is centrally stored in it. On the basis of this, a flow of information was defined and converted for the document creation.

To ensure a smooth process and the optimal coordination of all processes in parallel, a team of editors and illustrators were trained, who converted the first documentation modules. After two years preparation process of the most important part of the documentation for the wind generators, G8X and G5X was completed. Also for the new product G10X this solution has been already used by the operating and maintenance manuals.

From the newly defined editing process benefits mainly the engineer of the wind turbine manufacturer in a form of significant assistance.  Because a significant number of the target documents must not be drawn by them anymore.  Similarly, the content revision is simplified.  The information managers of arvato, who work locally at Gamesa, ensure the preservation of the initial information for the technical editors in the arvato-location in Barcelona.

With the introduction of a central content management system, based on XML and the adaptation of the standard S1000D, there are no additional layout costs. An integrated publishing engine creates the associated HTML and PDF files automatically after the creation and release of the XML files. Due to the central storage of data, all information and text blocks can be used multiple times if necessary and they need not be collected again. At the same time multiple translations and the unnecessary costs or errors can be avoided and it can guarantee a uniform style.  The application-oriented markup of the documents allowed a content-based publication which can concentrate on the needs of the end user.
